A choker is a frame. It draws a line under the face and tells the eye where to stop, which is why sculptors have been carving them for two thousand years and why we keep stitching them into camis.
The rule we use in the studio: the shorter the chain, the simpler the neckline. A fine gold choker over a ribbed cami does all the talking. A velvet blazer, buttoned, wants something with a little more weight, a flat snake chain or a ribbon tied once.
Our muse wore hers shopping, hands clasped around two paper bags, one hoop earring catching the arcade light. "People look at the neck first," she said. "Give them something to look at, then make them work for the rest."
Three ways to wear one this month: under a collar, over a turtleneck, or on its own with a square neckline and nothing else near it.
